There was a wreck out on the highway yesterday not far from where we are working. It’s hard to describe driving in third world countries, but you just know that these types of accidents must be a regular occurrence here.
The medical team from Indiana that is here working with us were first on the scent to render assistance. Because the wreck was not far from our work site our driver insisted on taking us to the scene. I wish he hadn’t. The destruction and carnage was difficult to see. Seven people were dead on the scene. Whether others died after being transported or not I can’t say.
What I can say is that at least seven people got out of bed that morning with no idea that it would be there last day on earth. Maybe they had a little something to eat for breakfast, maybe they didn’t. Maybe they said goodbye to their children, maybe they didn’t.
It’s tragic to think about, but of course even more tragic is the possibility that they stepped out into eternity without a relationship with their Creator. Did they know Jesus as their Savior? Will they be in heaven? Had they ever even heard the message of Jesus? I can’t answer those questions, but it’s the reason we have to go to places like Haiti.
The book of James speaks of the brevity of life when it says, “Yet you do not know what your life will be like tomorrow. You are just a vapor that appears for a little while and then vanishes away.” (James 4:14)
I know we can’t reach every person before they die to tell them that God has provided a way for them to be forgiven and have eternal life, but we can reach some of them. That’s why we have to go to places like Haiti. That’s why we have to reach out to those around us and at least try to give them Jesus.
Hug those you love extra tight. Tell them you love them more often. Slow down and enjoy the life you’ve been given. Look at the clouds. Listen to a bird sing. Get up and catch a sunrise. Make someone smile. And most important of all, live for Him every moment you have because none of us have been promised even the next breath.
But because of Jesus we have been promised life with purpose and power and eternity in paradise. I love you Cross Culture Church.
