I was just thinking about the ongoing debate (battle is probably a better word) between supernatural creation and evolution. Of course it’s not a new debate and there is nothing I will say in this blog that will be earth shattering or probably change anybody’s mind, but it’s still an important discussion because of the widespread influence the evolutionary model has had on our society.
The debate will likely rage until Jesus comes because the real issue is not material, it’s spiritual. Genesis 1:1 says, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.”Ever since the first man and woman Satan has been attempting to get us to doubt God’s word. At its core this debate is an attack on what God has said. If Satan can get people to doubt any part of God’s word then he can get them to doubt all of God’s word.
When discussing the issue it is important to remember a couple of things; first, there is a difference between a law or fact of science and a theory of science. All scientist would agree with that statement, but many who hold to the evolutionary theory forget that it is just that, a theory. A theory made famous by Charles Darwin’s Origin of the Species in which Darwin gives his interpretation of his findings while traveling as an amateur botanist aboard the HMS Beagle. Darwin argued that what he observed in the Galapagos islands, among other places, showed adaptation within a species to its environment for the betterment of the species, aka, survival of the fittest.
Darwin himself admitted that the weakest point to his theory was the lack of fossil evidence showing evolutionary stages of change, but he believed that as the fossil record grew proof for his theory would be found. Evolutionist point to a few fossils that, they say, show incremental changes that “prove” evolution, but the fact is the “evidence” is subjective at best and deceptive at worst.
The fact is Darwin was right, about the weakest part of his theory being the lack of fossil evidence. Now 150 years removed from the first printing of Origin of the Species there should be literally millions of intermediary fossils, but instead evolutionists are still digging in the dirt in search of the ever elusive “missing link.”
The second thing to keep in mind when considering the debate between Supernatural Creation and Evolution is that nowhere does the Bible conflict with any known law or fact of science. That in itself is nothing short of miraculous. The Bible doesn’t claim to be a science book and yet every place it touches a discipline of science it does so with complete accuracy. What makes that fact even more amazing is that a science book from even fifty years ago would probably run into some issues.
The theory of evolution has a number of problems not the least of which is the population of the earth. If man has been in the evolutionary chain for millions of years the population of the earth would be expected to be much higher than it is. Stasis is another difficulty. Why are there species today that look exactly like fossils from supposedly millions of years ago? The second law of thermodynamics, also known as the law of entropy also presents problems. This law of science states that everything is in a constant state of break down. The theory of evolution seems to directly contradict this established law of science.
Perhaps most troubling of all for evolutionists is the mathematical law of probability. Basically, when the odds of something occurring, in this case a random mutation resulting in positive evolutionary processes, become so high it is considered mathematically impossible. To quote Sir Fred Hoyle, longtime director of the Institute of Astronomy at Cambridge, “The overwhelming improbability of getting the enzymes needed for even the simplest form of life to function by chance.” The odds, he concluded, were “about the same as throwing a sequence of 50,000 sixes with unbiased dice…The difference between an intelligent ordering, whether of words, fruit boxes, amino acids, or the Rubik cube, and merely random shufflings can be fantastically large, even as large as a number that would fill the whole volume of Shakespeare’s plays with its zeros. So if one proceeds directly and straightforwardly in this matter, without being deflected by a fear of incurring the wrath of scientific opinion, one arrives at the conclusion that biomaterials with their amazing measure of order must be the outcome of intelligent design. No other possibility I have been able to think of in pondering this issue over quite a long time seems to me to have anything like as high a possibility of being true” (Evolution from Space, 1982, P.10, Sir Fred Hoyle, director of the Institute of Astronomy, Cambridge.)
The reality is supernatural creation simply makes more sense than the evolutionary theory. I know evolutionists will never admit that, but the problem is not in their head, it’s in their heart. To concede that there is a God who is the Creator and Owner of all that is means we are accountable to Him and for many that is unacceptable. The Apostle Paul said it best, “They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served something created instead of the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen”. (Rom 1:25 HCSB)
